The Criminal Mind
For the last few months, I've been researching the criminal mind (see http://thecriminalmind.us). I have to admit, the people who know me were a little surprised to see how far sweet little ole' me can delve into such dark territory and with such passion.
There's a reason why shows such as Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI, 48 Hours, Dark MInds, Dexter and more are so popular. We want to know. Most of us have a difficult time looking into our own darkness--who we really are when no one's looking. And for some of us, the darkness may surface, but we can look it in the eye and say: you are me.
There are 99% of us who don't have to deal with a voice that tells us to kill. Only 1 in 25 of us mentally, physically or emotionally abuse others without guilt or remorse. But buried deep within us is our own "Bad Seed."
Perhaps, on occasion, you steal, lie, or intentionally say something that hurts someone. Those are all from our dark side. Or greed, pride--just throw in the deadly sins. They're inside us all.
To see this in ourselves, we have to be willing to confront the shady, seedy, underbelly of who we are. It is by acknowledging it and owning it that empowers us. But the tendency is to run, as fast as we can, away from our shadow.
Perhaps, this is partially why we are so engrossed in the TV shows that we watch, the movies we see and the video games we play. This is the perfect way to indulge in the dark side without having to face our own.
